A person's physical and mental actions are controlled by the 10 pranas namely Prana, Apana, Vyana, Udana, Samana, Naga, Kurma, Krikala, Devadatta and Dhananjaya. When a person expires, the first 9 pranas along with material body are dissolved into the atmosphere and the 10th prana- Dhananjaya- continues to vibrate in the person's house and around close relatives. It is the presence of this Prana that we call 'pula' or 'mourning' and it is this Dhananjay Prana that controls our emotions like anger, sadness, desires etc. Hopes for tomorrow and desires keep this body in this world but many of us die with unfulfilled dreams and desires. The entire burden of misery is attached to the soul.

For a soul to attain salvation, there must be a redress. At the time of Thantrik kriyas after performing Sudarshana havan and such, we invoke that soul with miseries and separate the burden associated with it. Thila havan is done to alleviate the miseries, and after an assigned number of Thila havan- depending upon the severity- we wash the feet of Brahmins - depicting them as Mahavishnu followed by chanting of Sahasranama and Purana Parayanam to please the forefathers.

After Thilahavan, the cleansed souls are merged into Lord Vishnu by doing Sayujya pooja - an intense ritual of Mahavishnu pooja. Thilahavana and Sayujya pooja are never permanent solutions to 'pithru doshas'. By alleviating the miseries with all the above-mentioned good deeds and performing annual Shraddha, Vavubali/ amavasya tharpana, etc., a soul can pass the first stages of salvation, Salokya, Sarupiya, and reach the state of Sayujya.

A family, lineage and clan will survive and prosper only with the favor of our ancestors who are the reason for our very own existence.
